Drastic hedge cutting

After years of treating our privet hedge gently I've finally bitten the bullet and given part of it a drastic pruning! Did this about a month ago and hurrah there are signs of new growth from the woody stems...

    How long did it take to fill back in ? thinking of doing mine and need to cut it back a lot worried it will take years?
